What does a technical SEO audit include, and how do you find problems?

A technical SEO audit crawls your site the way a search engine does, reconciles what you publish against what Google has actually indexed, and scores every issue by ranking impact against effort. Will AI search engines like ChatGPT and Perplexity actually see my site?

Only if your content is in the raw HTML. The major AI crawlers, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and others fetch your HTML and do not run JavaScript, so anything that renders client-side is invisible to them. Google Gemini and Applebot do render, but roughly two-thirds of AI crawler traffic does not. Server-rendered HTML is now the requirement, not a preference.

The data is blunt. In a one-month analysis of production traffic, GPTBot made 569 million fetches and ClaudeBot 370 million, and neither executes JavaScript, they fetch script files but never run them, so whatever your framework renders in the browser they never see (Vercel, 2024). Combined, AI crawlers already fetch at roughly 28% of Googlebot's volume (Vercel, 2024), so this is not a niche audience.

They also waste enormous effort on broken sites. In the same study, 34.82% of ChatGPT's fetches and 34.16% of ClaudeBot's hit 404s, against 8.22% for Googlebot (Vercel, 2024), a clean sitemap and disciplined redirects decide whether an AI crawler spends its visit reading your best pages or chasing dead ends.

This is the single biggest technical mistake we find on modern sites: a React, Vue, or Angular app that renders everything client-side looks flawless to a human and almost blank to an AI crawler. The fix is server-side rendering or static generation, complete HTML with the content already in it before any script runs. What are the most common technical SEO problems, and which actually matter?

The most common problems are indexation blocks (stray noindex tags, wrong canonicals), duplicate and thin pages, broken redirects, slow Core Web Vitals, client-side-only rendering, and missing or mismatched structured data. Which matter depends on your site: for most businesses, indexability and rendering decide visibility, while crawl budget is only a real concern for very large sites.

Indexation is where the quiet losses hide. A page can be crawled and still not indexed because it is thin, duplicated, canonicalized to another URL, or blocked by a directive left over from staging. The most damaging failures are contradictions, a page canonicalized one way, linked another, redirected a third, because one wrong rule in a template propagates to thousands of pages and the traffic loss surfaces weeks later, far harder to trace.

Structured data belongs here too, with an honest caveat. Schema does not boost your rankings; it makes a page eligible for rich results and, increasingly, machine-readable to the AI engines that answer questions, and it must match your visible content or it can trigger a manual action (Google, 2026). The myth worth killing is crawl budget. Google is explicit that it only matters for sites with more than a million pages changing weekly, or ten thousand-plus pages changing daily (Google, 2026). For a typical local or SMB site, the problem is almost never crawl budget, it is indexability, thin pages, and orphaned URLs. How do Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) affect rankings and conversions?

Core Web Vitals are Google's three real-user metrics: Largest Contentful Paint (loading), Interaction to Next Paint (responsiveness), and Cumulative Layout Shift (visual stability). To pass, a site needs at least 75% of visits under 2.5s LCP, 200ms INP, and 0.1 CLS (Google, 2024). They are a confirmed ranking signal, and speed moves revenue as directly as rankings.

INP is the metric most sites now fail. Google replaced First Input Delay with INP as an official Core Web Vital on March 12, 2024, applying a stricter, more complete measure of responsiveness across every interaction, with "good" defined as at least 75% of visits responding in under 200 milliseconds (Google, 2024). Sites that passed under the old FID metric routinely fail INP, and heavy JavaScript is usually the reason.

Passing is genuinely hard, which is exactly why it is worth doing. In 2024, only 43% of websites had good Core Web Vitals on mobile, with LCP the hardest metric to pass at 59% (HTTP Archive, 2024). That measurement uses the current INP metric across millions of real origins, so clearing a bar the majority of sites fail is a durable advantage.

The business case is not abstract. A 0.1-second improvement in mobile load time lifted retail conversions by 8.4% and average order value by 9.2% across 30 million-plus sessions (Deloitte, 2020), and Google has reported that 53% of mobile visits abandon a page that takes more than three seconds to load (Google, 2017). We treat Core Web Vitals as an engineering problem, not a plugin: critical rendering path, deferred scripts, reserved space, and reduced main-thread work.

How do you handle a site migration without losing rankings?

A migration, new domain, new platform, new URLs, or a redesign, is the highest-risk event in SEO, and most losses come from a handful of avoidable mistakes. The core discipline is a complete URL map with a permanent 301 redirect from every old address to its closest new equivalent, so ranking equity transfers instead of evaporating. Nothing here should be improvised.

Before anything moves we inventory every indexed URL, its rankings, and its backlinks, then map each old URL to a new one. Every changed address needs a 301 to the most relevant new page, not a blanket redirect to the homepage, which Google treats as a soft 404 that throws away the equity you are trying to preserve.

Mobile-first indexing is now finished for the entire web, Google completed it on October 31, 2023, and crawls every site primarily with the smartphone Googlebot (Google, 2023), so a migration that ships a thinner mobile page than desktop loses content from the index. HTTPS is table stakes, and a botched HTTP-to-HTTPS move with mixed content or wrong canonicals can tank a site overnight.

Redirect hygiene decides the outcome. Chains bleed equity and slow crawling, loops break pages entirely, and every internal link should point directly at the final URL. The riskiest migrations are done quietly over a weekend with no plan. What is the difference between technical SEO, on-page SEO, and local SEO?

Technical SEO is whether search engines can reach, render, understand, and trust your pages. On-page SEO is the content of those pages, titles, headings, and how well they answer a query.
